(N.B. you can use the list for a drinking game\u2014at your peril.)<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li><span class=\"s2\">The leads will arrange to meet somewhere\/do something together, and one will say, \u201cIt\u2019s a date,\u201d leading to an awkward, \u201cWell, not a \u2018date\u2019 date,\u201d conversation <small><em>(added 11\/2024)<\/em><\/small><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">A first kiss between the leads is interrupted just as their lips are about to make contact<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">A homemade ornament is made\/shown\/discussed (a homemade wreath can substitute if necessary)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">A gingerbread house is constructed, or, at least, prominently featured in several shots<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">There is a Christmas ball or dance, and the female lead is the only one there in a bright red gown (about which the male lead says, \u201cYou look amazing\/beautiful\/stunning\/\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">Firewood is chopped <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">Someone says, \u201cI can\u2019t move here! My life is in (New York\/Seattle\/St. Louis\/Minneapolis\/some big city)\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">Eggnog is ostentatiously served<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">Two characters (usually, but not necessarily, the leads) bond while ice skating<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">A major expository scene between major characters takes place as they pick out a Christmas tree<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">A Christmas tree is decorated <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">There\u2019s a snowball fight<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">One of the leads is a single parent or is raising a cute niece\/nephew who has been orphaned<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">One or more of the main characters is mourning the recent loss of a parent\/parent figure<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">One of the leads delivers a variation on the line, \u201cMom always loved Christmas!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">There\u2019s a town tree-lighting ceremony<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">A conflict between crass commercialism and small town values drives part of the story (in a drinking game, two drinks if the villain is a real estate developer)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">Someone says, \u201cYou can\u2019t have too much Christmas\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">There\u2019s one final misunderstanding\/plot crisis that is handily resolved within the final three minutes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year when Hallmark Christmas movies (and their imitators on Lifetime, Netflix, et. al.) are streaming 24\/7. \u00a0In these Christmas-cookie-cutter cinematic confections, you are apt to encounter many of the items on the following list.
